I have been a dental hygienist for five years. I currently work in a state institution that houses' moderate to severely mentally retarded adults. The individuals who live here require constant care from staff. Many of our clients are either on medications that cause mouth (usually more than one), or their specific condition causes dry mouth. Along with the dry mouth symptoms, the clients exhibit moderate to severe gingivitis, bad mouth odor, difficulty eating, and swallowing, and numerous other symptoms related to xerostomia.
