Alpha Lipoic Acid, also known as thiotic acid, is often referred to as the "universal antioxidant", because it is soluble in both fat and water. As an oxidant, it helps neutralize free radicals in our body and protect our cells from damage. Unlike other antioxidants, it works in both fat and water, giving it a broad spectrum of action. It is found naturally in the body. It may help to build muscle glycogen, which is the reason why athletes use Alpha Lipoic Acid. Its main function is to increase the production of glutathione, which helps in dissolve toxic substances in the liver.
Recent research indicates that the antioxidant roles of Alpha Lipoic Acid may confer several health benefits. It is found widely in plant and animal sources. It is approved in Germany as a drug for the treatment of polyneuropathies, such as diabetic and alcoholic polyneuropathies, and liver disease. It has shown evidence of being effective in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and may be useful in treating some other aspects of diabetes. It may help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and may be protective, generally, against oxidative stress and, specifically, against atherosclerosis, ischemia-reperfusion injury and various radiologic and chemical toxins. It may also be useful in some inborn metabolic disorders. There is less evidence that it might be helpful in some neurodegenerative conditions. There is preliminary evidence that it might have some immune-modulating effects. It has been suggested that Alpha Lipoic Acid may slow aging of the brain and that it may be an anti-aging substance.
