Strontium is a trace mineral in the diet whose metabolism is closely tied to that of calcium. It is concentrated in the skeletal system, where it supports the function of osteoblasts (the cells which form new bone) while reducing the differentiation and activity of osteoclasts (the cells which resorb old bone). Some of the benefits of strontium are that it has been shown to prevent osteoarthritis and lessen the risk of dental cavities. It has also been show to reduce bone pain and lesions on the skin that may occur in certain conditions. The mineral may have bone forming effects. strontium is used in the treatment of some cancers, to ease the pain of patients. Research has long suggested that it may be an essential nutrient required for the normal development, structure, function, and health of the skeletal system.
strontium has been safely used as a medicinal substance for more than a hundred years. It was first listed in Squire's Companion to the British Pharmacopoeia in 1884. Subsequently, strontium was used therapeutically in the United States and Europe. As late as 1955, strontium compounds were still listed in the Dispensatory of the United States of America.
