Perilla Oil is derived from the seed of the plant Perilla frutescens. The Perilla plant is one of the best-known plants for producing alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Perilla Oil is a very rich source of alpha-linolenic acid, which is about 50 to 60% of the total oil content. Perilla Oil may have anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and anti-proliferative activities. It may be indicated as a cardioprotective supplement, to help prevent blood clots and to ameliorate some of the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. The possible actions of Perilla Oil are probably dependent on the presence of ALA.
ALA is metabolized to eicosapaentenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). There are three major types of omega 3 fatty acids that are ingested in foods and used by the body: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Once eaten, the body converts ALA to EPA and DHA, the two types of omega-3 fatty acids more readily used by the body. Extensive researches indicate that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and help prevent certain chronic diseases such as heart disease and arthritis. These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be particularly important for cognitive and behavioral function.
