Policosanol is a natural mixture of higher aliphatic primary alcohols which can either be derived from sugar cane or bees wax. Research shows that policosanol from sugar cane has a better effect on cholesterol levels than policosanol from bees wax.
Policosanol is indicated as an adjunct to dietary recommendations to reduce LDL-C and Total Cholesterol Levels (Type II hypercholesterolemia) as in Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular conditions, without any unsafe side effects caused by statins and medications. Polycosinol works by slowing down the production of cholesterol in the liver while increasing the livers ability to reabsorb LDL. Unlike statin drugs that are usually used to lower elevated cholesterol levels, policosanol does not inhibit the HMG-CoA enzyme.
Red Yeast Rice contains a number of naturally occurring compounds known as monacolins. Monacolins are known to inhibit the activity of an enzyme in the liver (HMG-CoA reductase) which is needed to produce cholesterol. Red Yeast Rice also contains a mix of sterols, isoflavones and unsaturated fatty acids, which are thought to contribute to the cholesterol and lipid-lowering effects of the monacolins.
