Eriobotrya japonica
Loquat is an evergreen tree growing to 9m by 5m. It is one of the most popular cough remedies in the Far East and the ingredients of many patent medicines. It has medicinal properties like antitussive, expectorant, antiemetic, antiviral, astringent, sedative, antibacterial, and analgesic. Loquat alleviates coughing, nausea, and belching. It also dissolves phlegm and act as an expectorant. The leaves are analgesic, antibacterial, antiemetic, antitussive, antiviral, astringent and expectorant. A decoction of the leaves or young shoots is used as an intestinal astringent and as a mouthwash in cases of thrush and also in the treatment of bronchitis, coughs, feverish colds etc. The flowers are expectorant. The fruit is slightly astringent, expectorant and sedative. It is used in relieving vomiting and thirst.
